A.B. Salem House carries a history that is deeply personal to the story of Kochi’s Jewish community. For generations, it was the family home of Abraham Barak Salem (1882–1967), the lawyer, social reformer, and political leader remembered as the “Jewish Gandhi.”

Born into the Meshuchrarim community, Salem became its first university graduate and first practicing lawyer. He spent much of his life challenging the social divisions that existed within the community, using peaceful protest and negotiation to secure equal rights for Malabari Jews at the Paradesi Synagogue. Beyond Synagogue Lane, he was also active in public life, serving in the Cochin Legislative Council and advocating for education, social welfare, and political reform.

In the 1950s, Salem played a key role in organising the migration of Cochin Jews to Israel, working directly with Israeli leaders to help thousands relocate. Yet despite helping shape that transition, he chose to remain in Kochi. The family home continued to be lived in by his son Gumliel and daughter-in-law Reema until 2016, long after much of the community had left the neighbourhood.

That continuity is what makes the house unique today. Many of its original domestic details remain intact, from historic furniture and built-in cupboards to terracotta flooring worn smooth by generations of family life. The restoration focused on preserving these lived-in qualities rather than reinterpreting them, allowing the house to retain the character of a private residence.

Today, A.B. Salem House offers four guest rooms within one of Synagogue Lane’s most significant family homes. Staying here is a chance to connect with the lives, choices, and legacy of the people who helped shape Kochi’s Jewish community.
